Community Play Rangers are playworkers who facilitate and support children’s play in outdoor environments. Children have less freedom to play out than generations of parents have had which combined with parental fear of traffic, strangers and other dangers, means that children are often unable to access their local community green spaces unsupervised.
Community Play Rangers are there to facilitate children’s play, encourage greater use of community green space through play and to supervise and support children to play.
We first began Community Play Rangers in 2002 with the launch of the first Community Play Rangers in B&NES at Rosewarn Park, Whiteway funded through Better Play.
We ran the CPR team until July 2005 when another organisation took over the running of all CPRs in B&NES.
Now in April 2009, we will be managing the Bath CPRs with Community Play Ranger Manager, Shiva Page leading the development of the project.
From April 2009, there will be two teams of two Community Play Rangers working in a variety of outdoor environments in the Foxhill and Twerton areas of Bath, supported by volunteers. We will be working closely with other Community Play Rangers in the B&NES area to ensure that there is a consistent and good quality approach.

Community Play Ranger sessions are Open Access and aimed at 5 - 13
year olds.
It is important for children to be able to play outdoors freely, actively
and imaginatively, able to take risks and be challenged.
Community Play Rangers are qualified play workers, trained and police
checked.
Community Play Rangers are there to manage risks and enable children and
young people to make the most of their leisure time and have fun by
supervising and supporting children in their play.
Children attending CPR Sessions are asked to give Basic information including Name, Age, Contact Telephone number (in case of accident) and to tell playworkers if they have any additional needs including allergies or medical conditions.
Children are free to come and go as they please.

Schools LinkBath Area Play Project Community Play Rangers have begun successful engagement through schools where children are able to access the outdoor environment and try a range of activities with the Community Play Rangers. Southdown Infants, Southdown Juniors and Combe Down Primary Schools have all taken up the opportunity so far with children from 5 to 11 years gaining huge amounts of confidence and teachers able to build on the learning potential of outdoor play. If your school in Bath would like to discuss this further, please contact the Community Play Ranger Manager Shiva Page on Bath (01225) 832479 |
