Teenage Rampage

Teenage Rampage is an evening for disabled young people aged 13 – 19 which meets every Tuesday during school term time, 7 - 9 pm at Odd Down Community Centre.

The session was developed in 2004 from ideas put forward by disabled young people attending what was our playscheme for disabled children aged 5 – 16. The young people requested a space where they could enjoy play and other similar age appropriate activities with young people of a similar age.

The session has grown to a thriving group which is regularly attended by an average of 12 disabled young people. Young people staying at the residential hostel at Fosseway School in Radstock have also chosen to join the group each week.

Our past successes have included an Animation project in conjunction with the Theatre Royal, culminating in the films being aired at the Egg to a wide audience. Our links with the Egg have continued with Teenage Rampage working with theatre practitioners on two successful drama projects. The first, an adaptation of A Christmas Carol combined drama, movement, film and animated work and was shown to a packed audience in December 2007. Staff from the Egg worked with Teenage Rampage to put together a ‘toolkit’ for other practitioners based on our experiences of putting together the show. The second Egg project was a reworking of Romeo and Juliet with the young people designing scenery, recording sound pieces and creating dance and movement sequences. The feedback from these projects has been fantastic and we maintain close links with the Egg, visiting for drama workshops on a regular basis. We are currently planning a possible future project.

In March 2009, we received some funding which allowed Teenage Rampage to run a successful residential weekend at The Mill on the Brue in Bruton. The young people took part in various activities, including canoeing, grass tobogganing and zip wiring, staying in dormitories on site for two nights. The video above shows what a great time we all had!

We try to have a varied programme of activities, and at the end of each term we have an informal planning session where young people can suggest ideas and plan the activities for the following term. We always welcome any suggestions or offers of help for particular activities. Activities we have enjoyed in the past have included: going out for dinner, swimming, barbecues, discos, bowling, picnics, ‘wild walks’, ‘temporary tattoos’, visiting the theatre, judo, rugby, a Bath Rugby visit, a Fire Station visit, pottery, banner making, den building, fire building etc. The programme for this term can be downloaded below.

Teenage Rampage is led by our Outreach Worker Sam Ward who also networks and meets with providers and agencies ensuring good communication of our services as well as keeping up to date with other relevant services which she is then able to pass on to young people.

Staff are all experienced at working with disabled young people as well as experienced play and youth workers who provide positive role models to young people whilst providing information and giving them opportunities to get involved with age appropriate activities and play.

How can young people get involved?

Any disabled young person aged 13+ is welcome to attend Teenage Rampage. The sessions are mainly based at Odd Down Community Centre but depending on what the group have planned, various other venues and activities may take place at different locations. Many families take advantage of a member of staff visiting them at home before coming to the sessions and / or chatting on the telephone about what will be happening at the sessions as this gives the young person a chance to meet a staff member before coming to the group. Social Services also refer young people to the group.

Prior to coming to a session for the first time, it would be best to ring the office or the Outreach Worker to check the location of the session to avoid disappointment.
