Teenage Rampage

A Club for disabled young people aged 13+ which meets weekly, every Tuesday 7 - 9 pm at Odd Down Community Centre, Odins Road, Bath.

This was developed from ideas put forward by disabled young people attending our playscheme for disabled children who requested a space away from younger children where they could still enjoy play and other similar activities but without younger children. It has grown over the last few years to a thriving group which is regularly attended by an average of 12 disabled young people. More recently we have begun work with Fosseway School in Radstock where young people attending their hostel have chosen to join the group on a regular basis.

Recent successes have included an Animation project in conjunction with the Theatre Royal, Bath where young people were able to put together story boards, make plasticine models and film them in sequence. The culmination of this project was when their films were aired at the Egg in October 2005 to a wide audience including very proud young people! We are planning to run a drama project jointly with the Egg, Theatre Royal, Bath in 2007. Young people will have the opportunity to commit to a regular session involving Theatre staff and our staff culminating in a live performance at the Egg.

Following consultation with users, we have secured funding from B&NES Get Active and Sports Relief to offer a session with a sports focus. Young People identified a range of sports they would like to try including judo, climbing, table tennis and horse riding. These sessions have been based at Fosseway School in Radstock.

We have successfully applied to BBC Children in Need to develop Teenage Rampage and will be working with Time to Share on our Dinner Party project and further Life skills development.

Teenage Rampage is led by our Outreach Worker Sam Francis who also networks and meets with providers and agencies ensuring good communication of our services as well as keeping up to date with other relevant services which she is then able to pass on to young people.

How can young people get involved?

Any disabled young person aged 13+ is welcome to attend Teenage Rampage. The sessions are mainly based at the Hut but depending on what the group have planned, various other venues and activities may take place at different locations. Young people may simply just turn up to a session but information will need to be left with the Session Leader including Emergency Contact details before a young person can be left in the care of staff.

Many families take advantage of a member of staff visiting them at home before coming to the sessions and / or chatting on the telephone about what will be happening at the sessions as this gives the young person a chance to meet a staff member before coming to the group. Social Services also refer young people to the group.

Prior to coming to a session for the first time, it would be best to ring the office to check the location of the session to avoid disappointment.

Staff are all experienced at working with disabled young people as well as experienced play and youth workers who provide positive role models to young people whilst providing information and giving them opportunities to get involved with age appropriate activities and play.

Twice a year we hold planning meetings where young people can suggest ideas and plan the activities for the following 6 months. We welcome all suggestions and any offers of help for particular activities.
