BAPP were awarded a grant from the European Social Fund in 2002 to develop and set up a toy library.

We spent some time consulting with local children and families about what they thought a toy library was, how they might use it and the kinds of things they would like to borrow. There were many surprises!

The Twerton Ultimate Radical Toy Lending Experience is open to any family in B&NES with children under 16 years of age. It is also open to groups which work with children e.g. nurseries, pre-schools and out of school clubs. We are also linked with the Bath Childminding Network who use the Library and the Hut twice a month to meet.

The Childminding Network meet on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month and people may choose to return toys and equipment on those days if it is easier.

The Toy Library has a Development Worker - Val Rowlands who monitors toy usage, maintains toys and equipment and where parents want suggestions for child development or other reasons, she is able to suggest items that may be suitable. The toy library has a large range of toys and equipment which is all catalogued and numbered with a system of borrowing like in a book library.

Members joining TURTLE, are issued with a membership card and then can borrow 2 toys per child for up to a month.

There are baby toys, pre-school toys, dressing up clothes, pop up tents, board games, construction sets including lego, k’nex, a go-kart, camping equipment, skateboard ramps, musical instruments, story bags and even a karaoke machine.

Types of toys and equipment that can be borrowed from TURTLE Toy LIbrary.

All toys and equipment are suitable for most children; toys with lights and noises are particularly suited to children who enjoy that type of play. The Development Worker will advise parents and carers if she feels that the toy would not be suitable e.g. due to the age of the child and small components.

These are just a very small number of the large selection of toys, games and equipment that we have available to borrow. To see the full range, please call into a Toy Library session to look through the picture catalogues or call to speak to a member of staff.
