Play & Wellbeing Groups

Social factors have a profound impact on child health. The UN Convention includes the child’s right to play and leisure (Article 51) but today’s children have significantly less opportunities to play freely. Play allows children to be in control yet freedom has been eroded due to perceptions of safety, parental anxiety, increased use of screens resulting in worsening children’s mental health and wellbeing. Children who play regularly with their parents are less likely to develop anxiety, depression, aggression and sleep problems.

Social and community networks play a huge part in long term socio-economic outcomes, cultural and environmental interactions and understanding. Regular play and wellbeing groups support parents playing with their children and encourage social connections which in turn leads to peer support and links families together.

Play, by definition, is controlled and directed by the players; and directed toward intrinsic rather than extrinsic goals. In play, children learn to solve their own problems, control their own lives, develop their own interests, and become competent in social interactions with all ages. Play is a non-judgemental structural intervention that attempts to change the social environment, shaping changes to children’s health behaviours and outcomes

Come along and build you and your child’s wellbeing, connect with others and build your understanding of the importance of play for your child’s development.

Our new Play & Wellbeing Groups will support families in two areas each year, supported through funding from the Lottery Community Fund.
